1. Introduction: The Ghost of Structure

The same is true of structure. It is the skeleton of thought, the invisible coordinates of the world. All our actions and judgments unfold within those coordinates, like fish moving through water while rarely noticing that water exists.
History shows that many great successes and failures were not caused simply by stronger will or better technology. They emerged from the constraints and biases of the structures in which people acted. A crack in a structure can allow change to spread rapidly; structural inertia can blunt the sharpest idea when it meets reality.
As Hegel suggested, reason reveals itself through history, and history is the trace left by structural forces as they rise and recede. The problem is that most of us cannot think above the structure. We keep making moves on a given chessboard while rarely asking:
Why was the board arranged this way?
2. Confusion Amid Disorder
In a rapidly changing world, we are easily swept along by floods of information, opinion, and emotion.
In meeting rooms, plans and goals change every week while decisions circle back to the same place. New tasks accumulate on top of old ones until even “priority” loses its meaning.
In public policy, reforms appear comprehensive on paper but encounter resistance everywhere in practice. Competing forces constrain one another until only a compromised result remains—unable to achieve the original goal or endure over time.
In personal life, we repeatedly promise to improve: learn a skill, change a habit, manage time better. Soon the plan is abandoned in a corner, and we return to a familiar track—often producing a “reasonable explanation” for the failure without noticing.
Most people attribute these difficulties to weak execution or inadequate methods. But the real problem may be that we began by working inside the wrong structure.
3. The Dual Nature of Structure
The word “structure” does not appear often in everyday conversation, yet structure is everywhere.
It surrounds us like air:
- It determines what we can see and what we overlook.
- It limits the range of options we can imagine.
- Quietly and invisibly, it shapes our judgments and paths of action.
Structure has a dual nature: it is both lens and cage.
As a lens, it allows us to understand the world by organizing complicated phenomena. As a cage, it filters out other possibilities without our awareness, making what remains appear to be “the whole world.”
Most problem-solving tools—the Pyramid Principle, design thinking, systems thinking—rarely challenge the structure of the problem itself. They help us find better moves on the existing board without asking whether this is the game we should be playing.
That is what makes structural blind spots so dangerous. They allow us to calculate with perfect precision inside the wrong coordinate system and devote exquisite effort to the wrong problem.
4. The Metaphor of Janus and the Emergence of a Path
Janus, the two-faced god of ancient Rome, looks backward into the past and forward into the future. People honored him at festivals and thresholds because he represented double vision: attention to the present together with awareness of its relationship to past and future.
I translated this posture into a framework for thought: JanusPath.
Its goal is simple: to act within a structure while remaining able to step outside and examine it.
The path contains three core ideas:
- Dual perspective: retaining both an immersed internal view and a detached metaperspective.
- Structural reflection: making the underlying forces that shape a problem the object of analysis.
- Path transition: when the current path cannot reach the goal, moving to another, more authentic point of departure.
At heart, this is metacognitive training. It helps us see how structure shapes us and how we might, in turn, influence structure.
5. Three Core Mechanisms
To make the idea practical, I divide it into three mechanisms and describe them in ordinary language.
1. Reflection — framing a dual perspective
In filmmaking, an actor must enter a role deeply enough to experience its emotion, while a director watches from the monitor and judges each shot in relation to the whole. Together, the two perspectives preserve authenticity while maintaining the work’s overall direction and rhythm.
2. Transition — analyzing the field of tension
Invisible forces pull behind every problem: conflicting goals, divergent values, and uneven resources. These forces shape how a situation develops. Transition means drawing those forces, seeing their direction and strength, and locating a possible turning point.
3. Configuration — cognitive realignment
A gap always exists between map and terrain. Configuration means updating the cognitive map continuously so that it fits reality more closely and is less distorted by bias or incomplete information.
6. Three Examples
Example 1 | Structural Reflection in Software Engineering
Software engineering appears to be a technical process, but it is fundamentally an institutionalized structure of collaboration. Many “technical problems” originate not in code, but in early errors in requirements modeling and structural decomposition. Structural reflection can improve business logic and system constraints during requirements work, eliminating potential problems earlier. JanusPath’s dual perspective reveals similarities between software processes and social institutions: requirements analysis resembles legislation, system design resembles institutional modeling, development resembles policy implementation, and testing and operations resemble supervision. Structural optimization improves engineering efficiency while also reflecting possibilities for institutional improvement.
Example 2 | Structural Reflection on Electoral and Governing Strategy
A national leader wins re-election through grand political slogans, taking advantage of gaps in an electoral system and structural emotions in particular regions. Yet the same social and economic structures that support the victory also constrain the space for governing. JanusPath examines internal logic—constitutional structure and party mechanisms—alongside external logic—economic conditions and social division—to reveal the conflict between political mobilization and institutional inertia. Public will can produce electoral victory, but structure determines whether policy can be implemented.
Example 3 | Hidden Structural Adjustment in Corporate Strategy Deployment
During an early corporate strategy-deployment exercise, an HR team introduces methods such as IPOOC and PDCA. Although it does not explicitly use the language of structural thinking, it quietly realigns the organizational structure. At the operational level, the method reduces structural inertia and creates conditions for future strategic adaptation. JanusPath reminds us that structural reflection does not always need to appear as philosophy. It can grow naturally through management tools in everyday work.
7. The Meaning of Cognitive Sovereignty
Tools can help you improve how you do things. Structural cognition allows you to redefine the rules of the game.
When you develop this capability:
- You no longer adapt passively to structures defined by others.
- You can adjust and even reconstruct structures of your own.
- You cease to be merely a carrier of content and become a designer of order.
At the individual level, this means greater adaptability and creativity. At the collective level, it means fewer structural blind spots and more sustainable decisions.
8. Conclusion: Finding Coordinates in Disorder
Complexity and uncertainty will not disappear. What we can do is first locate ourselves within the structure.
JanusPath is not a universal key. It is more like a map that helps us find real coordinates in chaotic terrain.
